Some northern states are reporting a problem with light-emitting diode traffic lights: The cool burning LEDs don’t generate enough heat to melt ice and snow that accumulates in front of the lenses on the signals.

While some cities around the country have found that energy-efficient traffic lights don’t burn hot enough to melt snow and can become covered over in a storm, the likelihood of that happening in Berks County is slim, according to a local company that sells the devices.

New Mexico utility providers are encouraging residents decorating for the holidays to consider switching to LED light bulbs, which use six times less electricity than traditional mini-lights.
